How do i become a good golfer, and what is the best set of clubs for a beginner?

I have never really played good, but i want to become a good golfer, not a pro. I am about to go to Iraq so is there anything i can practice there to help? I have seen those small indoor putting greens, do they help? Or do you suggest any other portable trainers? And what are some good clubs that wont break the bank for a beginner? I am 24, 6 ft. tall, and athletic if any of that matters.
